Dr. Stanley F. Seipel Obituary (1924 - 2021)

Dr. Stanley F. Seipel, aged 97 years, 3 months, and 23 days, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2021 at his home in Lanesville IN surrounded by his family. He was born February 3, 1924 near New Middletown IN, the son of Burrel Francis and Annie Laurie Liebert Seipel. He grew up on the family farm. After graduating from New Middletown High School, he entered the US Navy during World War II. He served 34 months, earned a Distinguished Flying Cross and participated in the Liberation of the Philippines. Because of the GI bill, he was able to attend Indiana University. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from IU Medical School in 1952. Dr. Seipel completed both his internship and his Residency of Internal Medicine in Louisville KY. He had a private General Practice in Lanesville for 38 years. In the beginning he was affiliated with the Corydon Hospital, as well as St. Edward's Hospital and Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. During his time at Floyd Memorial he took on many roles, as was expected of doctors at that time. Not only did he see his own patients daily, but he also assisted surgeons, gave anesthesia during surgeries, and served a monthly rotation in the Emergency Room. Dr. Seipel served as Chief of Obstetrics for many years, and a term as Chief of Staff at Floyd Memorial. In addition, he served a term as President of the Floyd Co. Medical Society. Dr Seipel loved his patients and took great pride in providing the best care possible, at the lowest price. Not only did he go on house calls, and spend many hours at his office, but when his office was closed, he also had patients come by his house for on-the-spot care. Dr Seipel worked at a time when there was no EMS; he went to accident scenes. Nor was there a 911 to call. Urgent calls came to his house and office at all times of the day and night. Dr Seipel was a perfectionist when it came to cleaning and sewing wounds. Many former patients delight in showing where he had sewn them up, especially if there is no scar. Between his stints in the ER and his own patients' injuries, his children and grandchildren were treated to an amazing array of stories about "Things Not To Do." Dr. Seipel was married to Joan Sieg Seipel. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage. He was a faithful member of St. Mary's Church in Lanesville since 1954. As a lover of nature, he spent his retirement years on his tree farms tending to and planting trees. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his daughter, Teresa Seipel, sister, Helen Collins, and his brother Eldon Seipel. He is survived by sons, Dr. Joseph Seipel (Carla), Brother Brendan "John" Seipel OSB; daughters, Ann Hudgins (Orville), Mary Seipel, Helen Lhotka (Daniel), Jane Seipel, Martha Wingate (William), Son-In-Law Robert Ehrhardt; grandchildren, Katie Crawford (John), Peter Seipel (Amy), Laura Seipel (Patrick Whang), David Seipel (Kristina), Rebecca Baibak (Larry), Edward Seipel, Maria Solis-Colegate (Josh), Joseph, Charmaine, and James Solis, Will and Anna Wingate; and nine great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 AM Saturday, May 29, 2021 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lanesville, IN. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 PM to 8 PM, Thursday, May 27, 2021, 1 PM to 8 PM, Friday and from 9 AM to 10:30 AM Saturday at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon, IN. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 PM on Friday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Stained-Glass Restoration fund.
